The Pro Europa Oak tree
Quercus Robur is English oak, chêne français, deutsche Eiche, European oak…
In 2020 - bearing autumn leaves in deepest winter – it came from England through Celtic Wales, France and Belgium. It was free to move in all 28 EU Member States.
In a ceremony in front of the European Parliament in Brussels in the dying days of the UK’s membership of the EU, it was presented as a symbol of the UK’s bonds with its EU partners.
The first winter of Brexit passed, its buds unfolded and each year its tender green leaves express the common destiny of Europeans, which Europe’s people will not give up.
Now with its roots in the soil of Europe’s capital, it symbolises the profound connections between the UK and the rest of Europe.
Its acorns will each be able to grow into another great oak of unity and strength. That seed is in the heart of every European, including English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern or Southern Irish and in every country of Europe, inspiring them to build prosperity, peace and equity together.
Our oak tree can be found in the Fontenay-Sous-Bois garden in Etterbeek
